Higher education innovators lead consortium working to improve data exchange to promote student success
WASHINGTON, DC, (March 14, 2017) DXtera InstituteSM, a recently launched nonprofit consortium that improves data exchange to promote student success in higher education, today announced its board of directors, which includes the following members:
Tristan Denley currently serves as vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Tennessee Board of Regents. Before moving to the system office, he was provost and vice president for academic affairs at Austin Peay State University. At Austin Peay he created Degree Compass, a course recommendation system that successfully pairs current students with the courses that best fit their talents and programs of study for upcoming semesters. This system, which combines hundreds of thousands of past students’ grades with each student’s transcript to make individualized recommendations for current students, has received recognition from EDUCAUSE, Complete College America, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and then-President Obama, and won a platinum IMS Global Learning Impact Award in 2014.
Timothy Renick is vice president for enrollment management and student success, vice provost, and professor of religious studies at Georgia State University. Since 2008, he has directed the student success and enrollment efforts of the university, overseeing some of the fastest-improving graduation rates in the nation and the elimination of achievement gaps based on students’ race, ethnicity or income level. Renick has testified on strategies for helping university students succeed before the U.S. Senate and has twice been invited to speak at the White House. His work has been covered by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and CNN and cited by then-President Obama. He was named one of 2016’s Most Innovative People in Higher Education by Washington Monthly and was the recipient of the 2015-16 Award for National Leadership in Student Success Innovation. He currently is principal investigator for a $9 million U.S. Department of Education grant to study 10,000 low-income and first-generation students nationally.
Garret Yoshimi brings over 35 years of rich experience and deep technological knowledge, in both the public and private sectors. As vice president for information technology and chief information officer for the University of Hawai’i System, Yoshimi provides executive leadership in collaboratively setting forth the overall vision, goals, strategies and plans for the effective and appropriate use of information technologies to advance the UH System. He previously served as vice president and chief operating officer for eWorld Enterprise Solutions, as well as, the first CIO for the Hawaiʻi Judiciary, senior technology executive for the East-West Center and CIO for DTRIC Insurance. He actively represented the University of Hawaiʻi in state and national venues as a member of EDUCAUSE, Internet2 and the Association for College and University Technology Advancement, which awarded him the Bill D. Morris award for individual leadership.
